I have looked and looked, and been unable to find John Leasil Brasher and his family in the 1870 census in Utah, though they should have been included.
I have found an entry in the 1870 Kamas, Summit County, Utah census that looks very suspiciously like a very poorly enumerated entry for them, and I decided I’d post the information here, to see what others may think.
UTAH , SUMMIT, RHODES VALLEY
Series: M593 Roll: 1612 Page: 130
Post Office Kamas Prarie
36 35
Brasie John 26 M W Farmer Virginia
” Emma 20 F W Keeping House England
” Caroline 3 F W at Home Utah
” John 1 M W at Home Utah
” Alwilda 29 F W Keeping House Wales
Lots of things are wrong: Virginia instead of Kentucky for John’s birthplace, Emma instead of Eliza, Caroline instead of Clara Bell, Alwilda instead of Ann (Butler), but the ages match and England and Wales are correct.
Possible reasons why this might be them:
1–they were too new to the area, and the enumerator didn’t talk to them but to a neighbor instead
2–they were worried about federal agents because of polygamy, so whoever did talk to the enumerator didn’t give the exact information
So, could this be them?
One possible course of action would be to search in 1880 for a John and Emma Brasie, and also for a John Brasie in 1860. If you find them, then that would rule this family out of contention, but if you don’t find them, then it adds a little more weight to the argument that this could be John and Eliza.
Temperance was born 23 Nov 1870 in Kamas, which I believe is in Rhodes Valley.
Alwilda is the name of a 5th century Swedish princess turned pirate. But the name does appear in ancestry with some welsh surnames. Anne shows up in St. brides, Glamorgan, Wales on the 1851 census as Anne or Annae, definitely not Alwilda. Thought it was worth checking.
I’m interested in others conclusions.

Thanks for the suggestion, Larry. I checked 1860 and 1880, and there were no “Brasie” listings at all in Utah.
Are you still looking for information On John Leasil Brasher? He is my GGGrandfather. I have some pictures and , stories. You may contact me by email @ aclark84020@yahoo.com
John Leasil Brasher is my great grandfather, too. Which of his children do you descend from?
I have lots of photos and stories, but I’m always interested in more. That’s one of the reasons for this blog.
I come from his daughter Temperance and George Sherman. John L Brasher’s house in Huntington is still standing and being lived in.
I come from Temperance’s brother Leasil, and I’ve been to Huntington. It’s cool that the house is still being lived in.
So, what stories can you share?
